Charging LiPo batteries: the basics

Charging is where most avoidable battery damage happens. This guide explains the basics in general terms; it does not offer a charger product, and it makes no claim about any specific charger's performance.

A LiPo cell charges in two phases: constant current until the cell approaches its full voltage, then constant voltage while the current tapers. A charger designed for LiPo chemistry manages that profile and stops at the right voltage. Using a charger designed for another chemistry, or for the wrong series count, defeats that protection and is one of the fastest ways to damage a cell or create a hazard. Match the charger to the cell chemistry and to the pack's series count, every time.

For multi-cell packs, balance charging matters. Cells in series drift apart over cycles, and a balance charger equalises them so no single cell is overcharged while the pack as a whole looks full. If your pack has a balance lead, use it; if your pack's design handles balancing internally, confirm that with the supplier rather than assuming it. Fast charging is a trade against cycle life: higher charge currents usually shorten the number of useful cycles, so the charge rate should be chosen for the application's real turnaround need, not set to maximum by default.

Practical habits complete the picture: charge where heat can dissipate, keep the cell in view during charging where possible, stop if the cell becomes more than mildly warm or swells, and never charge a damaged cell. This site's range covers cells and packs, not chargers; if your purchase needs a matched charger, raise it in the same inquiry so the supplier can confirm compatibility for the exact pack you are buying.
